Monday Motivation - Simplifying Grit
Happy "Morning After the Super Bowl" Monday!
I hope you had an enjoyable weekend. If you know me (and my bedtime routine), then you know my head hit the pillow before the game was over. I stayed up until the end of regulation, but I wasn't going to make it through overtime. My parents taught me that they play the games even if you go to bed and don't watch it. :)
One of the storylines for both teams was the amount of grit the players embodied. Grit is perseverance, determination, and an unwavering commitment to long-term goals, even when obstacles arise.
Do you over-complicate grit?
Grit is not perfection, beating yourself up for mistakes, or not meeting the unrealistic expectations you have for yourself.
Grit is showing up every day to make progress toward a long-term goal:
Grit is eating a salad every day when you want to eat healthier. Grit is not starving yourself.
Grit is letting a neighbor watch your kids for a couple of hours every month (or week), so you and your spouse can watch a movie at home, just the two of you. Grit is not spending $500 on a date night at an upscale steak restaurant every week.
Grit is calling your parents on the weekend just to say, "Hello!" and see how they are doing. Grit is not planning elaborate vacations for the whole family.
If you are reading this email, I bet you are a go-getter who sees perfection as an expectation. That's OK until we quit when we know perfection cannot be achieved. Don't quit.
Show up. Make progress. Take a step toward your goal.
The world needs you!
