Monday Motivation – The Power of a Promise
Happy Monday, Blue Eagle!
It's the first Monday in 2025, and most people are thinking about New Year's resolutions. As you know, New Year’s resolutions are often a bust—and I’m willing to bet you’ve experienced this firsthand. You start with a big goal, maybe “I’m going to work out every day” or “I’ll lose 20 pounds by spring,” and then... life happens. By February, you’re back to your old habits, feeling like you’ve let yourself down again.
What if I told you there’s a better approach? One that focuses on the power of a promise—a personal, meaningful commitment that transcends January 1st and actually leads to lasting change.
Promises work better than resolutions.
Personal and Flexible.
Instead of “I have to do X, or I fail,” a promise acknowledges that life isn’t always predictable. It gives you room to adjust rather than quit.
Rooted in Self-Respect.
A promise isn’t about guilt or shame; it’s about caring for your body and mind. You’re in it for the long haul, not a quick fix.
Small, Actionable Steps.
Think of a promise as a blueprint, not a vague wish. Some examples might be walking 20 minutes three times a day, swapping soda for water for lunch, and going to bed at 8:45 PM Sunday through Thursday.
These bite-sized goals help you build a structure to support your promise, so it’s more than a dream. Track your progress (not perfection), celebrate small wins, and keep moving forward. I use a habit-tracker paper calendar to track my progress. Celesta, my wife, uses an app called DBTC (Don't Break The Chain).
Breaking The Chain
by the way... sometimes the chain gets broken or I don't get to check off doing every habit. First, I acknowledge I'm not perfect; second, I ask if my habit is sustainable; and third, I either re-commit or build a better plan for making my habit sustainable.
You won’t always eat perfectly or hit the gym every day—and that’s okay. When you have a promise, you don’t throw in the towel at the first missed workout. You refocus and keep going.

Ditch It
Ditch the “all-or-nothing” mindset. Make a promise that respects your real life—and watch how it transforms your goals.
Here’s to a healthier, happier you in 2025 and beyond.
Stay healthy and happy,
