What’s the best sports bra for me?

For transparency, this is Bryan writing this article after getting input from female coaches, female athletes, and reading multiple articles on the subject.  Many women have asked my opinion about sports bras, especially women who are new to intense training like CrossFit.  I am not claiming to be an expert; however, there are some general principles you should keep in mind whether you are male or female and whether you are doing CrossFit or something else.

First, you should be comfortable.  This is true for shoes, belts, grips, and sports bras.  If you are uncomfortable, then your attire either does not fit or is being worn incorrectly.  This is often true for grips.  I am also aware of women being uncomfortable with their sports bras.  If this describes you, then you may need to wear a larger size or different brand.

Second, your equipment should work.  Sports bars are designed to securely hold woman’s breasts even during intensive movements.  If you do not feel supported, then you may need a smaller size or different brand.

I will give a few recommendations after hearing feedback from our coaches and feedback, but my best advice will be to try a few different sizes and brands to see what works best for you.  Do not expect to get it right in the first try.  Also, your sports bra is an investment in your health.  Cheap bras are cheap for a reason; they easily lose support, elasticity, and form.

The only sports bra I recommend is The Chestee.  It was designed specifically by and for women in CrossFit.  Here is their story: The Chestee story began with the barbell on our chest. Wodapalooza 2012 was a total bruise-fest.  The idea struck us as hard as the barbell hit our chest. Pausing from multiple reps, a future Chestee founder stuffed t-shirts underneath the straps of her sports bra to keep her lifting with more confidence.  She was stronger knowing that she was protecting her collarbone and minimizing bruising.  After the intensity of this workout, she realized she was not alone.  This eureka moment was the start of an innovation phenomenon.

Another sports bra options that come highly rated is from Nike, which come in light, medium, and high support.
