Team of three

It’s cold and it’s raining

It’s cold, and it’s raining.  Raining hard.  The driving kind of rain that makes you wonder if it’s rain or hail. What’s more, is the wind is whipping into your face so hard you have difficulty breathing.  Did I mention you’re cycling in your very first road race, and you’re getting ready to climb the tallest hill on the course?

How are you going to make it up the hill through the wind and rain?  With your team, that’s how.  A team of three good cyclists will beat one great cyclist to the top of the hill EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.  How?

Drafting

Drafting occurs when a cyclist moves into an area of low pressure behind another cyclist.  This reduces wind resistance and the amount of energy required to pedal.  Throughout a race, every teammate experiences the benefits of drafting.  Riders rotate positions as people in the back move their way to the front while leaders fall back and rest.  In some cases, the amount of effort is reduced up to 30 %.  Every rider goes farther and faster.

Success is bred in a team.  Sometimes you are at the front pulling the team along.  Sometimes you fall back and ride in the draft.  We have a team at Blue Eagle. That’s why about 60 % of our members attend class EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

When life is easy, your big project at work is done, and kids are sleeping through the night, it might be easy waking up at 5:30 AM to hit the gym.  But what happens when life isn’t easy.  Do you still go to bed early so you can wake up on time for CrossFit when your project at work is stalling, your kid is sick, or it’s raining outside?  If not, you need a team. A team of three: yourself, your coach, and a fellow athlete.

You need teammates

You need a coach and some friends with the same mindset as you.  The “friends” part may be different from the friends you already have.  You may need teammates who expect to see you in class or people who know you can give your best effort. Many people join Blue Eagle for these reasons.

Once you have found your team, things will become easier.  You still have to put in time and effort, but you will have the benefit of DRAFT.  Your team will pull you on the days you’re not quite feeling it.  And on days when you hit personal records and accomplish new goals, you will pull others along with you, too. Don’t try to go it alone.  The view at the top is always best shared.

Let’s Honor Labor Day 2020!

I’d love to see you again this Monday, Labor Day, at 9 AM!  🙂  Here’s what we are doing that day… We will honor Labor Day with the Murph workout.  Normally, we do this workout to honor Memorial Day, but circumstances didn’t allow that to happen.  We have three scaled options: 30 min, 45 min, and 60 min.  You are invited.  Please join us!

We are raising funds for Keturah’s Haven, which is an organization supporting homeless pregnant women in our community.  These women have nowhere else to turn.  Please consider a donation of $20; 100 % will go to Keturah’s Haven plus I am personally matching all donations received from former members.  Please join us!  You can donate here: Donate $20 to Keturah’s Haven

This has been a crazy year.  You may have noticed we are changing our name.  We are now Blue Eagle Fitness & Nutrition.  We are still CrossFit… now, CrossFit is a part of who we are.  We also had to re-schedule our traditional Murph workout.  We also re-scheduled our annual fundraising event “Girls for the Girls.”  All of this to say, we have more freebies to give away.  Everyone attending Murph on Labor Day at 9 AM or donating $20 to Keturah’s Haven will receive a free CrossFit Fulshear tumbler and a gift card to Main Squeeze Juice Co.  You can also purchase a Murph shirt for $30 and I will donate an additional $10 to Keturah’s Haven.

And finally, we will have a sports masseuse joining us at Blue Eagle for a limited time.  Her first day will on Labor Day from 10 AM-2 PM.  Her name is Lisa.

Massages will be done in our TV room with plenty of privacy.  The cost is $40 for a 25-minute massage. We will have room on the calendar for eight people.  As a token of my appreciation, two people who sign up at this link, Blue Eagle Massage, will win a free massage.  You will have renewed appreciation for what recovery can feel like. (I promise!)

We are Blue Eagle

For more than six years, we have been known as CrossFit Fulshear. But we are more than CrossFit. We help busy people get fit: losing weight, building muscle, and getting off diabetes medication. In six months, Chad* lost 8 % of body fat and gained 6 lbs. of muscle. The best part was that he lowered his A1C values so low he no longer needs his diabetes medication. We change lives.

We help people look and feel better. Jolene* is in her late 40’s. She joined our community six months ago, wanting to look better in her bikini at the beach in Destin and feel better after her long runs preparing for a marathon. Because of how we coach, Jolene moves *GREAT* now and loved her time at the beach.

Our coaching philosophy is this:

  • First, move better
  • Second, move better consistently (even when your coach isn’t watching)
  • Third, add intensity with more weight or faster repetitions

Our coaching is intentional and delivers results. Our clients are part of a supportive community with coaches and friends who keep them accountable. And our programming is different every day, so no one ever gets bored.

We move in every way we can imagine. We squat, lift, and press. We watch the strongest people in the world and do what they do; Olympic lifters clean and snatch. We also watch the most flexible people in the world and do what they do; gymnasts do pull-ups, push-ups, handstands, ring rows, and jumps. We use different equipment like barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, wall balls, sleds, ropes, and pull-up bars. We push and pull; we run, row, and bike.

My favorite part of what we do is on our success wall. This wall of pictures was designed initially to show prospects the real results delivered to real people. But it is also where we show our current clients the AMAZING results they have earned. People often look forward to the results they want but not giving themselves credit for results already achieved. Tom* joined wanting to “lose weight.” He didn’t know how much weight he needed to lose, but he knew his doctor was concerned. Twelve months later, he had lost 25 lbs. and could squat with his hips below his knees. It’s a fantastic achievement! It only happens through dedication. Tom was frustrated with not having lost more weight until we showed him a picture of when he started. He needed a reminder of all the progress he had made. Now his son is also part of our community.

We are more than CrossFit. We are also Forever Young… and Teens… and Personal Training… and Nutrition Coaching. And we are changing our name. We want our name to be more inclusive of everything we are.

We are Blue Eagle Fitness & Nutrition.

Labor Day Murph: Keturah’s Haven Fundraiser

On Labor Day, September 7, 2020, at 9 AM, we will honor all of those who have made contributions to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.  Register here for our Labor Day Murph.

To learn more about why we are called Blue Eagle, click here: We are Blue Eagle.

This is the traditional “Murph” workout:

“Murph”

1-mile run
100 pull-ups
200 push-ups
300 air squats
1-mile run

If you are looking at that workout and thinking to yourself, “Wow! That looks tough.  Maybe I shouldn’t go.” Please let me encourage you to be there.

Register here for our Labor Day Murph.

Three reason for you to honor Labor Day with us:

  1. Yes, the workout is long, but it’s OK to do long workouts. This is a HERO workout where we honor a service man or woman for sacrificing his/her life for our country.  This workout is in honor of Michael Murphy.  The workout will take between 30-55 minutes.  We will have three time caps: 30, 45 and 55 min.
  2. We will tailor the workout to fit every athlete’s abilities.  This is true for every workout we do and will be true for every HERO workout we do as well.  The most popular version of this workout will be run 400 m, then five rounds of : 400 m run, 5 KB swings, 10 push-ups from knees, 15 air squats, then end with running 400 m.  ALMOST NO ONE WILL DO THE WORKOUT AS WRITTEN  🙂
  3. The workout if bigger than YOU.  Please donate to Keturah’s Haven, which is an organization in our community dedicated to supporting those less fortunate than we are: pregnant, homeless women.  We are requesting a $20 donation
  4. Did I say three reasons?  I meant FOUR!  We are giving away prizes!
    1. Front Door Gourmet gift certificates (free food!)
    2. Sports massage therapy gift certificates

Register here for our Labor Day Murph.

Due to spacing constraints, almost everyone will work out outside. For anyone unable to do pull-ups (there are 100 of them!), we will scale to kettlebell or dumbbell swings. You will have your own 6-ft space to workout.

You already know your life is more than about your own well-being. That’s why we are raising money for Keturah’s Haven (https://keturahshaven.org/), which is an organizati

on dedicated to serving pregnant homeless women. We are requesting a $20 donation to Keturah’s Haven when you arrive to our 9 AM class on Labor Day.

If we have 50 athletes donate $20 apiece, we will raise $1,000 for this meaningful organization! Help make our goal a reality.

😍 We appreciate you and your patience 😍

Today, the Ft Bend County Judge issued a new order requiring face coverings of all employees and visitors.  This order is effective at 12:01 AM Thursday, June 25, and lasts until June 30.

The following exceptions apply:
– being outside
– when doing so poses a greater mental or physical health, safety, or security risk.

Other exceptions apply but do not relate to our gym.  You can read the judge’s order here: Mask Order.

Following up on our previous post, Our Response to the COVID-19 Crisis, we have made an adjustment.

Our plan is to require you to wear a mask unless it poses a mental or physical health or safety risk or we are outside.  What does this mean?  Let’s use tomorrow (“back squat day”) as an example.  Wear a face covering while your heart rate is low, for example, while warming up and colling down.  While lifting, remove your face covering if your covering prevents proper breathing.

If you have any questions, please feel to reply to this e-mail, post to our private Facebook page (please tag me), or arrive to class and listen to your coach.  Your health and well-being are of utmost importance to your coach and me.  We want you to be fit in all aspects of life.  🙂

Your new gym

Through these stay-at-home and self-quarantine events, are you among the many people finding themselves in one of two situations?

  • You have concerns about returning to your previous gym due to safety concerns
  • You haven’t been exercising, and this pandemic has shown you how important it is to make your health and fitness a priority.

You have three main options.  Which works best for you?

Globo Gyms

  • Planet Fitness, 24-Hr, or YMCA.
  • Prices at $10-50/month
  • Pros:
    • Lowest cost
    • Lots of weight machines and equipment
    • Large group classes with high energy
  • Cons:
    • Lengthy contracts (12-24 months, though I believe the YMCA is contract-free)
    • Large group classes are not where you want to be in our coronavirus environment
    • No coaching
    • Little community interaction
  • Who does this work for?
    • Motivated and knowledgeable gym-goer
    • Does not need oversight, help or accountability

Boot Camps

  • Orange Theory, F45, Camp Gladiator
  • Prices at $99-249/month
  • Often have an initial offer of 2-4 weeks free to get you in the door
  • Pros:
    • Classes often have more coaching than at Globo Gyms
    • Getting started is usually simple & straightforward
    • Popular and do a good job motivating people to make a lifestyle change
  • Cons:
    • For the higher price point, Boot Camps should offer more
    • Little-to-no focus on nutrition
    • Little community interaction

Wellness Centers

  • CrossFit Fulshear
  • Prices at $169-1,599/month
  • Start with personal training (minimum 3 sessions) and nutrition coaching
  • Pros:
    • Memberships start with a conversation about your goals, training/nutrition history, and a prescription for achieving your goals
    • Nutrition coaching is important
    • One place for coaching: strength, conditioning, nutrition, mental health
    • Every session at the gym is with a coach: personal training, small-group classes, nutrition coaching
    • Progress tracking for fat loss, muscle gain, and strength
    • Coaching modifies every workout or program to you as an individual
    • Fundraisers build community support
  • Cons:
    • Higher cost than Globo Gyms (but no long-term contracts)
    • High level of coaching, which may not fit well with someone who wants to put on their headphones and get on a treadmill

Depending on you and your needs, each of these three options can be beneficial. The truth is that none of these options work if you don’t show up consistently. The best facilities in the world, with all the top professionals and equipment, don’t matter if you’re not willing to show up.

Our Response to the COVID-19 Crisis

This afternoon, the President of the United States, top U.S. health officials, and the Harris County health department made several recommendations encouraging the general public to avoid groups of more than ten people.  The recommendations also advise that we should avoid places where people gather, such as churches and gyms.  The goal of these new recommendations is to prevent the rapid and uncontrollable spread of the COVID-19 virus.

In light of this new information, I have made the tough decision to suspend all CrossFit, Forever Young, and ChargerX youth classes effective Tuesday at 7 AM, i.e. we will still have classes at 5 AM and 6 AM on Tuesday.  (Please keep reading for the good news!)

Clancie is asking that all Forever Young class members show up to class tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10 AM so that she can share with you exactly how she will continue coaching you and building the Forever Young community.

Personal training sessions will continue.  (In fact, if you’re interested in personal training, please let your coach know.)

But here’s the good news… your coaches and I will not ask you to sacrifice the buffer of health and fitness you have already built during this time.  Instead, we will provide online training options to keep your immunity and fitness levels high.

The online program is regularly $289/month, but we’re going to give it to you for the price of your ongoing monthly membership.  We are also offering two additional bonuses: (1) online “group training” via Facebook Live, plus (2) your choice of a piece of equipment to check-out from the gym.

Here’s how it works:

  1. If you want to take equipment home for your own use, you are welcome to checkout your choice of one piece of workout equipment to take home starting at 8:30 AM on Tuesday. You are welcome to keep the equipment until we re-open or you may trade-in the equipment for something else later.  Here are your options (Remember… only choose one):
    • Two dumbbells
    • One kettlebell
    • One Plate
    • Jump rope
    • Weighted vest
    • Sand bag
    • Barbells are not available to take home. The GHD is also unavailable.  🙂
  2. Every weekday morning at 7:30 AM and Saturdays at 9:00 AM, a coach will do the workout and stream it on Facebook Live. One FANTASTIC option is for you to do the workout while watching the coach.  Only dumbbells, kettlebells, or boxes will be used for the workouts.  All you have to do is go to our private Facebook page to watch (https://www.facebook.com/groups/crossfitfulshear/).  The video will also be saved to our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC76DSD1FGiIwT3LlA7bP3-g) if you prefer to watch it later.  Ask your coach for modifications based on the equipment you have at home!
  3. Your coach will be contacting you via text message or phone call every day to see how you’re doing, make sure you have access to Facebook or if they need to send you the link to the workout, learn what additional equipment you have access to, and (of course) your score for the workout! J  Please let your coach know if you prefer text or phone.
  4. Ted from Front Door Gourmet will still deliver your delicious meals on Mondays. More details to come.

We are living in interesting days!  Working out will help you stay sane in these trying times! 🙂

Sleep Opportunity

Let’s think about giving ourselves enough sleep opportunity.

5 Factors of Health

We know that there are five things that can help improve our lives.

  1. Eat better.
  2. Sleep better.
  3. Exercise.
  4. Meditate, and
  5. Improve our relationships.

Sleep

Lots of us struggle with getting enough sleep. Have you ever laid in bed, you’re tossing and turning, that starts to stress you out and it becomes this never ending cycle of stress, can’t sleep, stress, can’t sleep?

Instead of thinking about getting sleep, which we can’t always control, think about sleep opportunity,  Think about the time that you go to bed, lights are out, eyes are closed, and count that as the time that you’re trying to sleep.

Instead of freaking out about, “Hey, I’m not asleep,” and then tossing and turning for an hour, or “I keep waking up in the middle of the night,” try to get seven to eight hours of sleep opportunity.

If you’re already doing that, try to add 15 minutes this week of sleep opportunity. So you’re in bed at 10 and waking up at 5, try to get in bed at 9:45.

Hope this helps. Have a great day.
